This painting is
also known as “The Bride”. The symbolism in this painting include; the offering of roses which is a symbol of
love and the virgins holding red lilies suggests physical love and passion. Marie Ford was the model for the Bride, Ellen
Smith is the virgin on the left and the virgin on the right was Keomi (the gypsy mistress of artist Frederick Sandys).

This painting is
also known as “Soul’s Beauty” and contains a few symbolic details, including; the palm in her hand suggesting
victory, the butterflies are a symbol of souls and the poppies are symbolic of sleep or death. The model was a dressmaker
who went by the name of Alexa (Alice) Wilding.

this painting:
The original was
rejected by the art world as a foley. But in the 1980’s it become one of the most popular prints of all time. It has
recently been suggested that the model was that of Mary Lloyd, who also modelled for other artist of that period including;
Sir Edward Burne-Jones, William Holman Hunt, Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema and John William Waterhouse.

executions on her life, Cecilia finally closed her eyes to die whilst singing to god. At this moment the angels came to escort
her to heaven, where she then became a saint. St. Cecilia is the patron saint of musicians and church music; her feast day
is the 22 November.

Taken from Homer’s Odyssey, where suitors
beset Penelope as her husband, Odysseus, is assumed lost during his journey home after the Trojan War. Penelope informs the
suitors that she will marry once she has completed her weaving, but each night she unpicks a section. Odysseus returns, disguised
as a beggar, to find the suitors presiding over his house and feasting off his livestock. He takes revenge and slays them
all.
